GLB and USDZ, explained

.glb

What is GLB?

GLB is the binary form of glTF, often called "the JPEG of 3D". One file packs the full scene: meshes, PBR materials, embedded textures, animations, and a real unit scale (meters). It is the standard for 3D on the web and the default output of most AI 3D generators.

Because everything is embedded in a single binary file, GLB transfers cleanly between tools with nothing lost in transit. glTF/GLB is an open Khronos standard, loads fast, and is supported by every modern engine, DCC tool, and web viewer.

What is USDZ?

USDZ is Apple's AR format: Pixar's Universal Scene Description packed into a single file that iPhones and iPads open natively in AR Quick Look - no app required. E-commerce product previews on Apple devices run on USDZ.

USDZ shines on Apple platforms and almost nowhere else, so the common workflows are converting a GLB into USDZ to ship an AR preview, or unpacking a USDZ back into GLB/OBJ to edit it in standard tools.

What survives the glb to usdz conversion

Format conversion is honest work: some data has nowhere to go in the target format. Here is exactly what carries over.

Mesh geometry

Every mesh carries over exactly, with scene transforms baked in.

PBR materials & textures

GLB's embedded textures and material properties translate to USD's preview surface - the model looks the same in AR.

Real-world scale

Both formats use meters, so a correctly-scaled GLB appears at true size in AR Quick Look.

Animations

This conversion targets static AR previews; animation clips are not carried.

Vertex colors

USD preview materials favor textures; vertex-color-only models may appear plain in Quick Look.

When should you convert GLB to USDZ?

Convert to USDZ to reach Apple AR: iPhones and iPads open USDZ natively in AR Quick Look from Safari, Messages, or Mail - no app needed. E-commerce 'view in your room' experiences on Apple devices run on exactly this.

Keep the GLB for everything else - Android's Scene Viewer, web viewers, and engines all want glTF. Ship both: GLB for the web and Android, USDZ for Apple.

And if what you actually need is a new model rather than a new file format: 3D AI Studio's main tool can generate 3D models from photos with AI - with exports to every format on this page.
