3MF and GLB, explained
What is 3MF?
3MF is the modern 3D-printing format designed to fix STL's gaps. A single .3mf file can hold multiple objects with names, colors, materials, real units, and even slicer settings like plate layout - which is why modern slicers such as Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer use it as their native project format.
Under the hood a 3MF file is a ZIP archive with an XML model inside, so it stays compact while carrying far more information than STL. The catch: plenty of older slicers, CAD importers, mesh repair tools, and model marketplaces still only accept STL - which is exactly when you convert.
- Developed by
- 3MF Consortium (Microsoft, Autodesk, HP, Ultimaker and others) (2015)
- Structure
- ZIP archive containing an XML mesh description
- Used by
- Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura, Windows 3D tools
What is GLB?
GLB is the binary form of glTF, often called "the JPEG of 3D". One file packs the full scene: meshes, PBR materials, embedded textures, animations, and a real unit scale (meters). It is the standard for 3D on the web and the default output of most AI 3D generators.
Because everything is embedded in a single binary file, GLB transfers cleanly between tools with nothing lost in transit. glTF/GLB is an open Khronos standard, loads fast, and is supported by every modern engine, DCC tool, and web viewer.
- Developed by
- Khronos Group (2015)
- Structure
- Single binary file: JSON scene + buffers + textures
- Used by
- Web viewers, Three.js, Unity, Unreal, AR apps, e-commerce platforms
What survives the 3mf to glb conversion
Format conversion is honest work: some data has nowhere to go in the target format. Here is exactly what carries over.
Triangle geometry
Every object's triangles carry over exactly, positioned as arranged in the 3MF.
Model dimensions
3MF millimeters copy 1:1 into GLB's meter-assuming space - scale by 0.001 in strict tools for true real-world size.
Multiple objects
Each 3MF object becomes a mesh in the GLB scene - the plate layout is preserved.
Colors & materials
3MF color extensions are not carried - the GLB arrives with a neutral material, ready for texturing.
Slicer settings
Print profiles and supports are slicer data with no GLB meaning.
When should you convert 3MF to GLB?
Convert to GLB to preview or share print projects digitally: a spinnable browser preview of the plate, an engine import, or a portfolio embed of your printable design.
Keep the 3MF for actual printing - it is the richer print format. The GLB is the display copy.
And if what you actually need is a new model rather than a new file format: 3D AI Studio's main tool can generate 3D models from photos with AI - with exports to every format on this page.
