PLY and OBJ, explained
What is PLY?
PLY was designed at Stanford to store scanned 3D data. Its superpower is per-vertex properties - most importantly vertex colors - which makes it the default output of 3D scanners, photogrammetry pipelines, and Gaussian-splatting tools.
PLY stores flexible per-vertex data (position, color, normal, confidence) plus faces. It has no materials, textures, or units. Scan data usually moves through PLY on its way to a printable STL or a web-ready GLB.

What is OBJ?
OBJ is the plain-text workhorse of 3D interchange. It stores vertices, faces, UV coordinates, and normals in a human-readable file, with materials referenced from a companion .mtl file. Practically every 3D application of the last 30 years can read it.
Because OBJ splits materials and textures into separate files, a bare .obj carries geometry and UVs but shows up untextured unless the .mtl and texture images travel with it. It has no units, no rigging, and no animation - which keeps it simple and universally compatible.

What survives the ply to obj conversion
Format conversion is honest work: some data has nowhere to go in the target format. Here is exactly what carries over.
Triangle geometry
Every face is carried over exactly - dense scan meshes convert without decimation.
Normals
Per-vertex normals survive (or are computed), so the OBJ shades correctly on import.
Model scale
Both formats are unitless; coordinates copy 1:1, keeping scanner-calibrated measurements intact.
Vertex colors
Standard OBJ has no vertex-color support - the scan's colors are dropped. Convert PLY to GLB instead if you need them.
Point clouds
A faceless point-cloud PLY cannot become an OBJ mesh - reconstruct a surface first (e.g. MeshLab).
When should you convert PLY to OBJ?
Convert to OBJ when scan data needs to enter mainstream tools: retopology in Blender, cleanup in a sculpting app, or use in engines and renderers that don't read PLY.
Keep the PLY as the archival master - it holds the vertex colors and per-vertex scan attributes OBJ throws away. For a colored digital copy, PLY to GLB is the better conversion.
