PLY and GLB, explained
What is PLY?
PLY was designed at Stanford to store scanned 3D data. Its superpower is per-vertex properties - most importantly vertex colors - which makes it the default output of 3D scanners, photogrammetry pipelines, and Gaussian-splatting tools.
PLY stores flexible per-vertex data (position, color, normal, confidence) plus faces. It has no materials, textures, or units. Scan data usually moves through PLY on its way to a printable STL or a web-ready GLB.

What is GLB?
GLB is the binary form of glTF, often called "the JPEG of 3D". One file packs the full scene: meshes, PBR materials, embedded textures, animations, and a real unit scale (meters). It is the standard for 3D on the web and the default output of most AI 3D generators.
Because everything is embedded in a single binary file, GLB transfers cleanly between tools with nothing lost in transit. glTF/GLB is an open Khronos standard, loads fast, and is supported by every modern engine, DCC tool, and web viewer.

What survives the ply to glb conversion

Triangle geometry

Vertex colors

Coordinates copy 1:1; scanners write millimeters while glTF assumes meters, so scale by 0.001 in strict tools if the scan imports large.

Faceless point-cloud PLYs need surface reconstruction first (e.g. MeshLab) before any mesh conversion.
