Behind the scenes

How this template works

Each run makes one chess piece in your theme. Keep the same theme and pick the next piece to build a matching set, then print two colours for the two sides.

  1. 1
    Step 1 · Image Studio

    Design the piece

Image Studio sculpts the chosen piece in your theme, keeps its classic chess silhouette and height, and stands it on a weighted round base.

  2. 2
    Step 2 · Image to 3D

    Build the 3D model

Image to 3D (Prism 3.1) builds the piece with Fast textures and Standard mesh quality.

Tips for the best result

  • Short themes work best: "Pirates", "Robots", "Ancient Egypt".
  • Make two themes face off: "Pirates" for white, "Royal navy" for black.
  • Add weights or a coin in the base during printing for a premium feel.

Do it yourself for more control

  • Use the exact same theme text for every piece so the set matches.
  • Scale pieces in Print Export: king about 9 cm, pawn about 5 cm.
  • Print one side in a light and one in a dark filament, or paint them.

Good to know

Each run makes one piece; a full set is six runs (king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn).

Use the 3D AI Studio MCP to run the "Themed Chess Pieces" template (https://www.3daistudio.com/templates/custom-chess-set) for me.

My idea: Pirates
Piece: King
Side: Theme colours

Follow these steps in order. The prompts and settings are the template's own, so use them word for word and only put my idea where it says {MY IDEA}.

1. Design the piece
Call generate_image_nano_2_1 with aspect_ratio "1:1", resolution "1K", output_format "png" and this prompt:
"""
Chess set theme: {MY IDEA}. Piece: the KING, the tallest piece of the set, crowned and regal. A single chess piece from a custom themed chess set, designed for 3D printing: the theme is expressed through the character, costume and details, while the piece stays instantly recognisable as its chess role by height and silhouette. It stands on a round, weighted, stepped chess-piece base. Compact and sturdy, no thin parts sticking out, everything attached. The entire piece visible with generous empty margin, centered, frontal three-quarter view. Crisp sculpted detail. Isolated on a seamless pure white (#FFFFFF) background, soft even studio lighting, no shadows on the background, no other pieces, no board, no text. Light and surfaces: soft, even, diffuse studio light from the front, and at most a soft satin sheen: no mirror-like gloss, no bright white hot spots or glare, and no reflections of lights, windows or surroundings.
"""
If I want to start from a sketch or reference image instead, call upload_image so I can hand it over, then call edit_image_gpt with the upload in images, quality "low", output_format "png" and this prompt:
"""
Turn the drawing in the reference image into a chess piece, keeping its design and colours. Light and surfaces: soft, even, diffuse studio light from the front, and at most a soft satin sheen: no mirror-like gloss, no bright white hot spots or glare, and no reflections of lights, windows or surroundings.

2. Build the 3D model
Call generate_prism_3_1 with the task_id of the image from step 1 in images, texture_model "3.5", texture_quality "fast", geometry_quality "standard", pbr false, lighting_removal false.

3. Export
Export it for printing: call convert_model on the 3D model with output_format "3mf" (or "stl" if I ask for it), plus max_size and unit "cm" if I gave you a print size.

After each generation call, keep polling get_generation with its task_id until it completes, then show me the result with show_generation before you start the next step.

Or automate it with the API

The same tools are available through the 3D AI Studio API. Call them from your own code to make hundreds at once, build them into your app or run them in your pipeline.
