Behind the scenes

How this template works

Dragons are hard to print: thin wings and spikes snap. The template designs your dragon in a compact, sturdy pose on a base first, then builds the 3D model from that design.

  1. 1
    Step 1 · Image Studio

    Design the dragon

Image Studio draws your dragon perched on a rock with the tail wrapped around the base and thick, solid wings, so the print has a big footprint and no fragile parts.

  2. 2
    Step 2 · Image to 3D

    Build the 3D model

Image to 3D (Prism 3.1) turns the design into a 3D model with Fast textures and Standard mesh quality.

Tips for the best result

  • Describe colour, horns and one standout feature, like a scar or a gem.
  • A drawing works too; the design and colours are kept.
  • Resin brings out the scales; on FDM print at 15 cm or larger.

Do it yourself for more control

  • Ask for a pose in the Image Studio prompt: sleeping on a hoard, roaring, wings spread.
  • Use Ultra mesh quality for sharper scales, then Print Repair before slicing.
  • Use Split for printing to print the wings separately for very large prints.

Good to know

Very thin wing membranes are thickened so they print; for paper-thin wings, print them separately in resin.

My idea: A crimson fire dragon with golden horns
Style: Painted
Pose: Perched
Scene: Just the dragon

Follow these steps in order. The prompts and settings are the template's own, so use them word for word and only put my idea where it says {MY IDEA}.

1. Design the dragon
Call generate_image_nano_2_1 with aspect_ratio "1:1", resolution "1K", output_format "png" and this prompt:
"""
Dragon: {MY IDEA}. A single dragon sculpture designed for 3D printing: a powerful, compact pose perched on a rocky base, the tail curled around the base, wings either folded against the body or raised as thick solid membranes, horns and spikes kept short and sturdy. The entire sculpture and base visible with generous empty margin, centered, three-quarter front view. Crisp sculpted scales and detail. Isolated on a seamless pure white (#FFFFFF) background, soft even studio lighting, no shadows on the background, no text. Finish: painted in rich natural colours with subtle gradients on the scales. Light and surfaces: soft, even, diffuse studio light from the front, and at most a soft satin sheen: no mirror-like gloss, no bright white hot spots or glare, and no reflections of lights, windows or surroundings.
"""
If I want to start from a sketch or reference image instead, call upload_image so I can hand it over, then call edit_image_gpt with the upload in images, quality "low", output_format "png" and this prompt:
"""
Turn the dragon or creature in the reference image into a dragon sculpture, keeping its design, colours and features.

2. Build the 3D model
Call generate_prism_3_1 with the task_id of the image from step 1 in images, texture_model "3.5", texture_quality "fast", geometry_quality "standard", pbr false, lighting_removal false.

3. Export
Export it for printing: call convert_model on the 3D model with output_format "3mf" (or "stl" if I ask for it), plus max_size and unit "cm" if I gave you a print size.

After each generation call, keep polling get_generation with its task_id until it completes, then show me the result with show_generation before you start the next step.

Or automate it with the API

The same tools are available through the 3D AI Studio API. Call them from your own code to make hundreds at once, build them into your app or run them in your pipeline.
