Tripo P2 vs Tripo P1: What Changed and Which One Should You Use?
![]()
Tripo P2 is the successor to Tripo P1 in the Smart Mesh series, and both are available on 3D AI Studio from day one. The short version: P2 keeps everything that made P1 the go-to game-ready model and raises the fidelity - noticeably sharper textures and higher mesh accuracy on the same fast, engine-friendly foundation. Here's the full breakdown so you can decide when to switch and when P1 still makes sense.

What Actually Changed
Texture quality is the headline. P1's textures were serviceable for mid-distance game assets but showed their limits on close-ups. P2's texture pass is the single most visible upgrade of this generation: cleaner albedo detail, fewer smeared regions, and materials that hold up when the camera gets close.
Mesh accuracy took a real step. P2 tracks the input image more faithfully - silhouettes, proportions, and fine structures come through with fewer deviations. If you've ever generated the same concept twice on P1 and gotten two different interpretations, P2 is noticeably more consistent.
Native quad mesh output is brand new. P2 can generate four-sided polygons instead of triangles - the topology riggers and character artists actually want for subdivision and manual editing. Enable the Quad Mesh Output toggle and the quad mesh is delivered as an FBX file, with a GLB preview stored alongside it so the model still displays in the browser viewer. P1 has no quad mode at all.
The game-ready DNA is unchanged. Native 3D diffusion generating directly in three-dimensional space, clean edge loops, consistent mesh density, and polygon budgets in the range real games ship. Assets still drop into Unity, Unreal, and Godot without retopology. The polygon ceiling also more than doubled: up to 50,000 faces versus P1's 20,000.
It takes a bit longer. P1 generations finish in 60-90 seconds; P2 typically takes 2-5 minutes. That's the trade for the texture and accuracy gains - still well within a single iteration loop, but if raw turnaround speed is your priority, P1 keeps the crown.
Where Tripo P2 Wins
- Any asset the player will see up close. Weapons in first-person view, characters in dialogue cameras, hero props. P2's texture and accuracy gains matter most here.
- Concept-art fidelity. When the art director expects the model to match the concept, P2's input faithfulness saves correction rounds.
- Anything you plan to rig or subdivide. P2's native quad mesh output gives you four-sided topology straight from the generator - no retopology pass before the model goes to a rigger or into a sculpting workflow.
- Consistency. More input-faithful results mean fewer re-rolls to land the asset you wanted.
Where Tripo P1 Still Makes Sense
- Established pipelines. If your pipeline was tuned around P1's output characteristics and it works, there's no forced migration - P1 stays available in the workspace and via the API.
- Background and filler assets. For props the player never inspects, P1's quality is still perfectly shippable - and at 60 credits versus P2's 70, the savings add up across a large asset set.
- Raw turnaround speed. P1's 60-90 second generations remain the fastest way to blockout a scene with placeholder-quality assets.
When to Use Neither
If you're after maximum fidelity rather than game-ready output - hero renders, product visualization, 3D printing masters - look at Tripo 4.0, the new flagship with up to 8K PBR textures, or Hunyuan3D 3.5. Both produce heavier meshes that you'd then remesh for real-time use.
Try Both Yourself
Both models run on 3D AI Studio on the same credits - free accounts get 100 credits monthly, no credit card. Run the same concept through Tripo P2 and Tripo P1 in the live comparison tool and judge the difference on your own art style.
